Holy Saturday
(Christian Feast Day)

Holy Saturday is the day before Easter Sunday in the Christian calendar.

It is the last of the three holy days of the Easter period (Triduum Sacrum), following Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. It marks the 46th day after the end of the Carnival season. According to tradition, on this day, Jesus Christ lay dead in His tomb, and from Holy Saturday to Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In Hungary, this day is not a public holiday at workplaces where people are required to work on Saturdays. The date of Holy Saturday can fall anywhere between March 21 and April 24.

The name of the day in various languages refers to either the daytime mourning or the evening celebration. In Anglican traditions, it is known as Easter Eve or Low Saturday. In the Philippines, it is called Black Saturday or Glory Saturday (Sabado de Gloria), and in the Czech Republic, it is known as White Saturday. The Hungarian name refers to the events of Holy Week.

When the Saturday passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought expensive spices and went to anoint the body of Jesus. Early in the morning on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They said to each other, "Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?" But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him, just as He told you.'"
