All Saints’ Day
(Christian Holiday)

A Christian holiday commemorating saints not listed in the calendar
In Christian countries, on this day and the following one, we remember those saints who do not have a specific feast day. The celebration is marked by remembrance of the deceased. Hundreds of thousands of people visit cemeteries across the country to light candles on the graves of their departed loved ones.
November 1st in the Roman Catholic Church is the feast of the Church triumphant — the day to remember those purified souls who have reached Heaven.
The feast was assigned to November 1st during the papacy of Pope Gregory IV (827–844). Its celebration was ordered by King Louis the Pious within the Frankish Empire in 935.
In Hungary, the holiday is documented from the Middle Ages, becoming widespread during the Baroque era (17th century). The large number of places named “Mindszent” (meaning All Saints) also reflects its lasting remembrance.
