The Surrender at Világos

The Surrender at Világos on 13 August 1849 – The Final Chapter of the War of Independence
The years 1848–49 marked the most turbulent period of the Hungarian War of Independence, when our nation fought against Habsburg oppression in the struggle for autonomy and freedom. The 13th of August is the day of the Surrender at Világos, which also signified the tragic conclusion of the war.
On Monday, 13 August 1849, the commander of the Upper Danube Army, Artúr Görgey, resolved to capitulate to the invading forces of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, thereby defying the Austrians – this was the Surrender at Világos. Though this decision brought an end to armed resistance, it has remained deeply etched in the memory of the Hungarian people as a symbol of courage and perseverance.
The surrender at Világos did not signify defeat, but the birth of new hope – the yearning for liberty and independence continues to live on in the national consciousness. Each year, on 13 August, we honour the heroes who gave their lives for a freer Hungary.
“Freedom is not a gift, but a treasure to be won.”
— Artúr Görgey
Today, more than a century and a half later, we still believe: the sacrifice made for freedom is never in vain, so long as there are those who remember.
