First Sunday of May
Mother’s Day
(Hungary)

On this day, children and adults present bouquets of flowers to their mothers, expressing the vast kindness, selfless love, and patient care that words can hardly convey. Although there is only one dedicated day each year, we must remember that every day of the year is too little to fully show our gratitude.

On this occasion, nurseries, kindergartens, and schools hold lovely little performances to honour mothers and grandmothers.

The celebration of mothers dates back to ancient Greece, though different countries observe it on various days. In England, during the 1600s, Mothering Sunday was celebrated on the fourth Sunday after Easter. In the United States, Mother’s Day was first celebrated in Boston in 1872, but it was Anna Marie Jarvis who succeeded in making it a national holiday by 1914, setting the date as the second Sunday in May in memory of her late mother.

In Hungary, Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1925 by the Hungarian Youth Red Cross. In 1928, a ministerial decree added it to official school celebrations. It is a movable feast observed on the first Sunday of May. Most countries celebrate it in spring and May, usually on the second Sunday of the month. However, some nations observe it later in the year, such as Argentina on the third Sunday of October, Russia on the last Sunday of November, and Panama on 8 December.
