The Treaty of Trianon (4 June 1920)

The Treaty of Trianon was signed on 4 June 1920 at the Grand Trianon Palace in Versailles. As a result of the treaty that formally concluded the First World War, Hungary lost approximately two-thirds of its territory and population, making the Treaty of Trianon one of the greatest catastrophes in Hungarian history.

(30 August 1940)

The Second Vienna Award was concluded on 30 August 1940 at the Belvedere Palace in Vienna. The foreign ministers of Nazi Germany and Italy awarded Northern Transylvania, which had been ceded under the Treaty of Trianon, back to Hungary. The territory covered approximately 43,000 square kilometres and had a population of around 2.5 million.

The Return of the Southern Territories (11 April 1941)

On 11 April 1941, troops of the Royal Hungarian Army crossed the former Hungarian–Yugoslav border in order to bring Bačka, Međimurje and the Baranja Triangle under Hungarian control. Hungary thereby joined the attack against the collapsing Yugoslav state, which, contrary to prior fears, did not yet result in a British declaration of war.
