1956 Commemorative Ceremony in Edinburgh

A dignified 1956 commemorative ceremony in Edinburgh – October 18, 2025

The Hungarian community in Scotland gathered on October 18, 2025, to commemorate the heroes of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight in Edinburgh with dignity and unity. The event took place in an uplifting atmosphere, where every moment emphasized national remembrance and the strength of the community.

The ceremony was opened by Reverend György Vidits, who, in his introductory speech, spoke about the timeless message of freedom. This was followed by a celebratory address by Dr. László Kálmán, Hungary's Consul General in Edinburgh, who emphasized:
"Today, the bravery of the heroes of 1956 can still serve as a compass for all of us – no matter where we live in the world."

The next touching moment of the commemoration was the blessing by Reverend Zoltán Sáfrány, which reinforced the celebratory mood of the event with a deep spiritual message.

A particularly beautiful and hopeful moment came when Sáfrány Lelle, just five years old, recited a poem, symbolizing that the memory of the 1956 revolution lives on in the hearts of even the youngest generation. He was followed by Zsolt Bátori, who recited a moving poem that fittingly recalled the heroism and sacrifices of the revolution.

The speeches were concluded by Lieutenant Colonel Gábor Oláh, who delivered a celebratory address with a personal tone and historical accuracy, recalling the events of 1956 and their lasting significance.

A highlight of the event was the screening of Lieutenant Colonel Gábor Oláh’s award-winning 56 documentary film, which deeply moved the attendees and authentically presented the historical moments of the Freedom Fight.

During the event, a special exhibition featuring 17 pieces related to the 1956 revolution was on display, which was viewed for the first time by the Hungarian diaspora in Scotland. The panels not only presented historical facts but also personal stories and memories, strengthening the sense of belonging.

The event served as a fitting reminder to the community that the 1956 revolution is not just part of our past, but also our heritage – one that we are responsible for preserving and passing on, no matter where we live in the world.
